Will Ireland's future energy be secure?

The report sets out that Ireland’s future energy will be secure by moving from an oil- and gas-based energy system to an electricity-led system, maximising our renewable energy potential, flexibility and being integrated into Europe’s energy systems.

How will Ireland meet its energy goals?

To meet this overarching commitment, Ireland has set targets to increase renewables in the electricity, heat and transport sectors (16% of final energy consumption) and improve energy efficiency (20% savings). At present, we are projected to miss these targets – with emissions projected to be 9% – 14% below 2005 levels by 2020.

Petrol demand may be 7.4% higher than in 2022 and reach 96.5% of the pre-COVID demand observed in 2019. Transport emissions may be 11.8 MtCO 2 e, up slightly on 2022 emissions. In the first 9 months of 2023, Ireland imported 9.1% of its electricity supply, up from 1.1% in 2022.

Why does Ireland need gas?

After oil, gas is Ireland’s second most prominent energy source. Gas makes up almost half of our electricity generation and will be required for many years to supply flexibility as renewable generation grows. We are highly dependent on imported gas, which leaves us exposed to growing geopolitical tensions and shifts in the global power balance.
